Installed 358 welded-mesh perimeter system. Image: Command Fence · source

Quick answer: A 358 fence is a high-security welded steel mesh fence with a nominal 76.2 mm × 12.7 mm (3″ × 0.5″) rectangular aperture made from 4.0 mm (8 gauge) wire. CommandFence panels are produced at 76.5 × 12.5 mm wire spacing, so the short gap is slightly tighter than the 12.7 mm nominal. The aperture is too narrow to admit a finger or the toe of a boot, which makes the panel effectively unclimbable without tools, and the 4.0 mm wire at a welded intersection resists hand-held bolt cutters.

It is the default perimeter specification for prisons, airports, substations, data centres and military sites. Panels are typically 2515 mm wide and supplied in heights from 2.0 m to 6.0 m.

What does “358” actually mean?

The number is a dimensional code taken from imperial measurements:

3 — 3 inches (76.2 mm), the long side of the mesh aperture

5 — 0.5 inches (12.7 mm), the short side of the aperture

8 — 8 gauge (≈ 4.0 mm), the wire diameter

So “358” reads as 3″ × 0.5″ × 8 gauge, or 76.2 × 12.7 × 4.0 mm in metric.

        Correcting a common error

Several fencing sites claim the “5” refers to the “twisting degree of the mesh” and the “8” to a wire-to-spacing ratio. This is incorrect. 358 mesh is welded, not twisted or woven — there is no twist to describe. The three digits are simply aperture length, aperture width, and wire gauge. If a supplier explains 358 any other way, treat it as a signal that they are reselling rather than manufacturing.

The same naming logic produces the sister products: 3510 is the same 3″ × 0.5″ aperture in lighter 10-gauge wire, and 868 or 656 describe twin-wire panels by their wire diameters (8-6-8 mm and 6-5-6 mm) rather than by aperture.

Command Fence supplies 358 in four build codes — 2DG, 2DF, 3DG and 3DF — differing in post profile and fixing system. See the 358 Metal Fence product page for the model-by-model breakdown.

Why 358 defeats climbing and cutting

Security fencing fails in three ways: someone climbs it, cuts it, or lifts the bottom and crawls under. 358 addresses all three geometrically, not by adding hardware.

Against climbing. A 12.7 mm gap admits neither a fingertip pad nor a boot welt. An adult needs roughly 25 mm of purchase for a finger hold and 35 mm for a toe hold — the climb-resistance requirements for this panel category are set in BS 1722-14:2017. The panel offers 12.7 mm. Unlike chain link, there is no diamond aperture to wedge a foot into, and unlike palisade, there are no vertical pales to grip. The climber has nothing to load.

Against cutting. Bolt cutters need jaw clearance around the wire. The 12.7 mm gap physically blocks a standard 600 mm bolt cutter jaw from seating on the vertical wire, so an attacker must work from the horizontal wire — where 4.0 mm of steel at 450–550 MPa demands sustained effort per cut, and a man-sized breach requires 15–25 cuts. Attack-tested variants push this beyond the LPS 1175 delay thresholds (Issue 8 ratings B3 / C5, formerly SR2 / SR3 — verifiable in the LPCB Red Book).

Against under-crawl. Because panel wires are rigid and welded, the bottom edge cannot be lifted the way chain-link fabric can. Standard practice is to set the panel 50 mm above finished grade on a concrete kerb or ground beam; on soft ground, specify a buried panel extension or an anti-dig plate.

A fourth advantage — surveillance. The aperture is narrow but the fence is see-through. Guards and CCTV keep an unbroken sightline through the perimeter, and the fence itself casts no shadow for an intruder to hide in. Solid walls and welded palisade both surrender this.

How to choose in one line: if the threat model includes a determined human attacker with hand tools, specify 358. If the requirement is demarcation and deterrence against opportunists, 3510 or 868 delivers most of the effect at 60–80 % of the cost.

Coatings and realistic service life

The number that matters is coating thickness and process, not the word “galvanized.”

Pre-galvanized wire, then welded — zinc is burned away at every weld intersection. Cheapest option, and the weld points are the first thing to rust. Acceptable only in dry inland climates.

Welded, then hot-dip galvanized (HDG) to ASTM A123 / ISO 1461:2022 — the whole panel including weld nodes is coated at 60–80 µm. This is the correct baseline for any project expected to last.

Duplex: HDG + polyester powder coat — zinc handles the electrochemistry, powder handles UV and abrasion, and the combination outlasts the sum of its parts because the powder layer slows zinc consumption.

For coastal, port and island projects — a large share of shipments to Kenya, Chile and the Philippines fall in this band — always specify duplex and increase post wall thickness to 3.0 mm. Skipping duplex lowers the panel price slightly, but early replacement costs the full fence plus installation.

Posts, fixings and installation notes

Post selection. 80 × 60 mm RHS at 2.0 mm wall is standard to 2.4 m. Above 3.0 m, or in any location with design wind speed above 40 m/s, move to 100 × 100 mm at 3.0 mm wall. The panel is stiff enough that wind load transfers almost entirely into the posts and foundations — under-specifying the post is the single most common failure mode in cheap 358 installations.

Foundations. Typical concrete pad 400 × 400 × 600 mm deep for a 2.4 m fence; 500 × 500 × 900 mm for 4.0 m and above. Increase depth in sand, peat or high water table. Straight-line runs need an intermediate straining post every 50 m.

Anti-tamper fixings are not optional. A 358 panel secured with standard M8 hex nuts can be removed with a spanner in under two minutes, which defeats the entire specification. Use shear nuts (the head snaps off at torque, leaving nothing to grip), clamp bars, or through-bolts with the thread deformed after tightening. Fix from the secure side wherever geometry allows.

Panel orientation. Install with the horizontal wires on the secure side and the vertical wires facing out. This removes even the marginal ledge that a horizontal wire presents to a climber.

Ground following. 358 panels can be raked to roughly 1:10 without stepping. Steeper than that, step the panels and infill the triangular gap at the base — never leave the gap, and never rake the panel beyond its raking limit, which twists the welds.

What actually drives the price

Ranked by impact on a delivered square-metre cost:

Steel wire rod price — the largest single input, and it moves. Quotes older than 30 days are indicative only.

Coating system — duplex costs more than HDG alone; contact us for a quote comparing both.

Panel height — cost per m² is broadly flat, but taller fences need heavier posts and larger foundations, so the installed cost per linear metre rises faster than height.

Post specification — often 25–35 % of the material package; the place cheap suppliers cut.

Freight and packing — panel geometry means a 40 HQ container is usually volume-limited before it is weight-limited; good stacking design is worth real money per m².

Order volume — tooling and line setup amortise over the run; project-scale orders price materially better than trial quantities.

Pricing: panel and system prices move with steel and zinc markets, so we quote each project individually. Contact us for a current quotation based on your height, coating, posts and destination.

Specification checklist for your RFQ

Send these ten lines and you will get comparable quotes instead of guesses:

Total linear metres, plus a site drawing or coordinate list

Fence height, and whether topping (barbed / razor / cranked arm) is required

Aperture and wire diameter — confirm 76.2 × 12.7 × 4.0 mm nominal (CommandFence production: 76.5 × 12.5 × 4.0 mm), or state the variant

Coating system — HDG only, or HDG + powder coat, with target microns

RAL colour

Post section, wall thickness and fixing type

Number of gates, type, clear openings, and whether automation is required

Ground conditions and design wind speed

Destination port and Incoterm

Governing standard or client security specification, if any

Skipping items 4, 6 and 8 is what produces quotes that look 30 % cheaper and arrive as a fence that fails in five years.

Five mistakes that cost money after installation

Buying on panel price alone while the post spec is silent. Panels rarely fail. Posts and foundations do.

Pre-galvanized wire in a coastal project. Weld nodes rust first, and the failure looks like a manufacturing defect long before it is a corrosion one.

Standard nuts instead of anti-tamper fixings. Turns a high-security fence into a removable one.

No anti-dig detail at the base. The most common real-world breach of a 358 perimeter is under it, not through it.

Ordering gates late. Gate lead times exceed panel lead times. Specify them in the same RFQ or the fence sits complete with a hole in it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a 358 fence?

A welded steel mesh security fence with a 76.2 mm × 12.7 mm aperture in 4.0 mm wire, designed so the mesh offers no finger or foot hold and resists bolt-cutter attack. It is also called anti-climb fence or prison mesh.

Why is it called 358?

From its imperial dimensions: 3 inch × 0.5 inch aperture, 8 gauge wire.

Is 358 fence genuinely unclimbable?

Without tools and without an aid, yes for practical purposes — the aperture is below the threshold for a finger or toe hold. With a ladder, a vehicle, or an adjacent structure, any fence can be crossed. 358 is a delay and detection element within a system, not an absolute barrier. That is why high-security sites pair it with topping, clear zones and PIDS.

What is the difference between 358 and 3510 fence?

Identical aperture; the wire differs. 358 uses 4.0 mm (8 gauge), 3510 uses roughly 3.0–3.2 mm (10 gauge). 3510 costs 20–30 % less and suits commercial perimeters; 358 is the specification for prisons, airports and critical infrastructure.

What height 358 fence does a prison require?

Commonly 5.0–6.0 m, usually as a double fence with a sterile zone between, razor coil topping and a perimeter intrusion detection system. The controlling number comes from the corrections authority's own standard, not from the fence supplier.

How long does a 358 fence last?

Hot-dip galvanized: roughly 20–25 years to first maintenance in a temperate urban environment, 8–12 years within a kilometre of surf. Duplex HDG-plus-powder extends both figures by roughly 50 %.

Can 358 panels be installed on a slope?

Raked to about 1:10; steeper ground requires stepped panels with the base gap infilled.

How much does 358 fencing cost per metre?

Panel prices depend on coating, height, order volume and current steel and zinc markets, so please contact us for a project quotation; posts, gates and freight are quoted separately. Installed cost per linear metre varies too widely by country, ground conditions and labour rate for a single figure to be meaningful — price the material package first, then the civil works locally.

Does 358 fence come in colours?

Yes. RAL 6005 moss green and RAL 9005 jet black are stock; any RAL is available to order via polyester powder coating over the galvanized base.

Can I get 358 with a security rating?

Attack-tested configurations are certified under LPS 1175 Issue 8 to B3 and C5 (formerly SR2 and SR3; certificate number to be confirmed at quotation and checked against the LPCB Red Book). Certification applies to a complete tested system — panel, post, fixing and foundation — so a rating cannot be claimed for a panel bought loose and installed on someone else's posts.

Specify with a manufacturer, not a trader

Command Fence has manufactured engineered perimeter systems in Raoyang, Hengshui, Hebei for over 15 years, with 10,000+ tons of annual output shipped to more than 50 countries including Kenya, Chile and the Philippines. Every project is supported with CAD assistance, multi-stage QC across wire drawing, welding, galvanizing and powder coating, and export packing designed for sea freight.

This initial treatment is critical in preventing rust and extending the lifespan of our products. Following this, the powder coating application adds an additional protective layer that is both visually appealing and enhances resistance to scratches, UV rays, and chemicals. Ultimately, these combined treatments result in a product that is built to withstand the rigors of outdoor exposure while maintaining durability and reliability.

Quality assurance is an integral component of our production process. Command Fence conducts full inspections that encompass the welding processes and material strength tests, ensuring each item meets our high standards. Our quality inspection protocols involve detailed evaluations at each stage of manufacturing, from raw material selection through to final product assembly. By adhering to these rigorous quality control measures, we reinforce the trustworthiness of the Majiang product line, providing our customers with the confidence that they are investing in a robust and high-performance fencing solution.

Whether for commercial, residential, or industrial use, spiked fences are quickly becoming a preferred option for enhancing security across the globe. This article will explore the benefits, design considerations, and applications of spiked fencing, and why it is setting new heights in perimeter reinforcement.

Spiked fences are designed with metal spikes or protrusions, strategically placed along the top or within the fence structure to discourage unwanted entry. These sharp and often visually imposing barriers make it difficult for individuals to climb over or attempt to breach the fence. The spikes are typically made from durable metals such as steel, aluminum, or stainless steel, ensuring that the barrier remains strong and reliable for years to come.

While the appearance of spiked fencing may be intimidating, it serves a practical and legal purpose: enhancing safety and reducing the risks associated with unauthorized access to a property. These fences are not just about aesthetics; they are a critical investment in preventing intrusion.

1. Effective Deterrence

The primary purpose of any perimeter security system is to act as a deterrent to potential intruders. Spiked fences take this function to the next level by adding an element of danger to the boundary. The sight of sharp spikes at the top of a fence sends a clear message to would-be trespassers that the property is well protected and that attempting to climb the fence is not a safe or viable option.

2. Increased Security

When compared to traditional fencing options, spiked fences offer a superior level of security. The metal spikes make it physically challenging to scale the fence, particularly when combined with additional security measures such as barbed wire, electric fencing, or surveillance cameras. Spiked fences, when strategically designed and installed, can significantly reduce the likelihood of a successful intrusion.

3. Durable and Low Maintenance

Spiked fences are often made of high-quality metals such as galvanized steel, which is resistant to rust, corrosion, and environmental wear. This durability ensures that the fence can withstand harsh weather conditions, extreme temperatures, and general wear over time, without the need for frequent maintenance. Furthermore, metal fences are generally easier to clean and maintain than wood or other materials that may rot, warp, or require periodic staining or sealing.

4. Aesthetic Appeal

While spiked fences are primarily designed for security, they also have the potential to add a unique aesthetic appeal to a property. The sharp and angular design of the spikes can create a striking, modern look, making the fence a standout feature on any property. Available in a range of styles, from minimalist to more ornate designs, spiked fences can be customized to complement the overall architecture of the surrounding environment.

5. Versatility in Application

Spiked fences can be installed in various settings, from residential properties to commercial and industrial facilities. They are highly adaptable and can be tailored to meet specific security requirements. For example, spiked fencing is frequently used around government buildings, military installations, correctional facilities, schools, warehouses, and private estates. Additionally, spiked fences can be installed along the perimeter of properties or incorporated into gates, walls, and other boundary structures.

While spiked fencing is an effective and robust security solution, its design and installation require careful planning to ensure it delivers maximum protection without compromising aesthetics or functionality. Here are some key design considerations:

1. Height and Spike Density

The height of the fence and the density of the spikes play a crucial role in determining the level of security provided. A higher fence with closely spaced spikes offers greater deterrence and security. However, the height of the fence should also be in line with local regulations regarding perimeter barriers. Some regions may have legal limits on the height of fences, and property owners must comply with these rules to avoid legal issues.

2. Material and Coating

Choosing the right material for the fence is essential for both durability and effectiveness. Galvanized steel is a popular option due to its strength and resistance to rust. For areas prone to high humidity or coastal environments, stainless steel may be a better choice due to its superior resistance to corrosion. Additionally, coating the spikes and fence with a protective finish, such as powder coating, can help prevent rusting and enhance the overall lifespan of the fence.

3. Integration with Other Security Measures

Spiked fences are often more effective when used in combination with other security technologies, such as motion sensors, CCTV cameras, and access control systems. Integrating these features ensures that the property remains fully monitored, and any attempts to breach the perimeter are immediately detected and addressed.

4. Compliance with Regulations

As with any security system, spiked fences must comply with local building codes, safety regulations, and zoning laws. In some cases, property owners may need to obtain permits before installing spiked fences. It’s essential to work with local authorities to ensure that the fence meets all legal requirements while providing the desired level of security.

1. Residential Security

Homeowners often seek enhanced security features to protect their families and possessions. Spiked fences provide a strong deterrent to burglars and trespassers. They can be used as standalone security features or in combination with other elements such as smart gates and security lighting.

2. Commercial and Industrial Facilities

Commercial properties, warehouses, factories, and distribution centers are prime targets for theft and vandalism. Spiked fencing can create a nearly impenetrable perimeter around these properties, reducing the likelihood of unauthorized access and potential damage. These fences can also protect valuable equipment, inventory, and intellectual property.

3. Government and High-Security Sites

Critical infrastructure such as government buildings, military bases, prisons, and research facilities require the highest level of security. Spiked fencing provides an effective solution for reinforcing security at these sites. With additional features like razor wire and electrified wires, spiked fences can form part of a multi-layered security strategy to protect high-value assets.

4. Educational Institutions

Schools, universities, and other educational institutions are increasingly using spiked fences to protect students and staff. These fences act as a deterrent to unauthorized individuals who might seek to gain entry to the premises for illicit purposes. Additionally, they contribute to maintaining a safe and secure environment on campus.

In an increasingly security-conscious world, spiked fencing offers a powerful and effective solution for perimeter reinforcement. Its combination of deterrence, durability, and aesthetic appeal makes it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications. By setting new heights in perimeter reinforcement, spiked fences offer enhanced protection and peace of mind for property owners, whether they are securing a home, a commercial establishment, or a high-security site.

For those considering installing a spiked fence, it’s important to work with a professional fence manufacturer and installer to ensure the design is optimized for both security and compliance with local regulations. With the right approach, spiked fencing can provide a long-lasting, robust solution to modern security challenges..

What is 2DF Wire Mesh Fencing?

2DF wire mesh fencing is a type of fencing system that is particularly distinguished by its simplified design and structural integrity. The term ‘2D’ refers to the two-dimensional nature of the wire mesh, which features two horizontal wires running along the top and bottom of vertical wire strands. This innovative configuration offers enhanced stability and strength compared to traditional fencing systems. The ‘F’ in 2D wire mesh fencing commonly denotes its purpose of sqaure shaped posts, which is often focused on security and safety in various applications, from commercial to residential purposes.

The fencing system comprises several key components, among which are the seamless steel curved posts and the double horizontal wire mesh. The seamless steel posts provide robust support while resisting the elements, ensuring longevity and durability. Meanwhile, the double horizontal wires enhance the overall security by preventing tampering and providing a solid barrier against intrusion. Such features contribute to the fencing’s ability to serve as a deterrent to potential breaches while maintaining a functional aesthetic.

In addition to its security capabilities, 2D wire mesh fencing is widely recognized for its aesthetic appeal. The simple and elegant design integrates easily into various environments, making it a popular choice for parks, commercial sites, and residential areas. When installed, the fencing offers a seamless view of the surroundings, allowing for effective surveillance while upholding the beauty of the landscape. This unique combination of functionality and visual enhancement makes 2D wire mesh fencing an attractive alternative within the broader scope of security fencing solutions.

Key Features of 2D Wire Mesh Fences

2D wire mesh fencing stands out in the realm of security solutions due to its distinctive features, which enhance both functionality and installation efficiency. One of the most notable characteristics of 2D wire mesh fencing is the unique post buckle groove connection. This feature allows for a seamless and robust assembly of the fencing panels to the posts, ensuring a stable structure capable of withstanding various environmental conditions. The post buckle groove connection offers significant advantages over traditional fencing systems, as it reduces the potential for panel sagging and enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the fence.

Another integral aspect of 2D wire mesh fencing is its push type installation method. This approach simplifies the assembly process, making it particularly suitable for projects requiring quick turnaround times. The ability to securely fix the panels by pushing them into the posts minimizes the need for additional tools and equipment, thereby streamlining the installation. This feature is especially beneficial for both DIY enthusiasts and professional contractors, as it reduces labor costs and time while still delivering a high-quality fencing solution.

The adaptability of 2D wire mesh fencing to uneven terrain is another significant benefit. The flexibility in installation allows the fencing system to be adjusted as needed, accommodating various ground contours without compromising its structural integrity. This is particularly advantageous in areas where land is not perfectly level, providing a reliable method of securing properties, gardens, or construction sites. The combination of the unique post buckle groove connection and push type installation method contributes to making 2D wire mesh fencing a versatile option for a variety of applications, from residential to commercial needs.

Installation Process of 2D Wire Mesh Fencing

The installation of 2D wire mesh fencing is a straightforward process that can be accomplished through various methods, with the push type installation method being particularly effective. This technique allows for a seamless setup without the use of connectors, ensuring a clean appearance and increased durability. Here is a step-by-step guide to facilitate the installation process.

1. **Preparation**: Start by measuring the area to determine the length of fencing required. Clear the ground of any debris, vegetation, or obstructions where the fence will be installed. This step is crucial for achieving a level installation.

2. **Materials Gathering**: Acquire the necessary materials, including the 2D wire mesh panels, posts, a spade, a level, and a mallet. It may also be beneficial to have concrete mix available for securing the posts in place.

3. **Post Installation**: Begin by marking the locations for the posts, ensuring they are evenly spaced. The recommended distance between each post is typically 2.5 to 3 meters. Dig holes that are sufficiently deep to provide stability—ideally around 60 cm deep. Place the posts into the holes and use a level to make sure they are vertical. If required, add concrete to secure the posts firmly in place.

4. **Attaching the Mesh Panels**: Once the posts are securely installed, it’s time to attach the 2D wire mesh panels. Align the panels with the posts and use the push method to slide the bottom of each panel into the post’s base. This method allows the weight of the panel to help secure it without the need for additional connectors.

5. **Adjustment**: After all panels are installed, make any necessary adjustments to ensure that each panel fits snugly against the posts. This is particularly important in varying ground conditions where some leveling may be needed.
