Sports Court and Field Fencing Guide: Tennis, Football, Baseball, Volleyball and Multi-Use Courts

ApplicationsCommandFence

Choose coated chain link for visible, flexible sports boundaries, then match enclosure height and mesh to the activity. Start with CommandFence’s CLY Chain Link Fence and specify baseball backstops and taller ball-containment areas separately. Develop each run's mesh, supports, foundations and gates around its role on the site.

Compare the court requirements

Use these enclosure examples to frame the design brief, then select the assembly for each run. Review the area beyond the fence when deciding its height, and schedule perimeter boundaries and ball-catching enclosures separately.

Court Example height Mesh/fence type Key requirement
Tennis 4 m Coated chain link; 45 × 45 or 50 × 50 mm mesh Ball containment outside player movement space
Football 2 m Coated chain link; 50 × 50 or 60 × 60 mm mesh Boundary control; separate review behind goals
Baseball 1.2–2.4 m perimeter range Galvanized, PVC-coated diamond mesh Separate perimeter, dugout and backstop designs
Volleyball 3–4 m Coated chain link; 50 × 50 or 60 × 60 mm mesh Containment with suitable surrounding clearance
Multi-use courts Select for the sports programme Flexible woven diamond mesh Check every intended sport and ball type

Tennis courts

A tennis enclosure example combines 3 m-wide panels, 3.8 mm coated wire, 60 mm outside-diameter posts with 2.5 mm walls, and 48 mm horizontal supports with 2.0 mm walls. Finish choices include dark green and grass green with PVC/PE mesh; mounting choices include embedded posts and base plates.

Start the layout with the agreed playing and movement areas, then locate the enclosure. Show corners, entrances, nearby seating and changes in ground level. Ask the supplier to identify how the proposed taller sections are supported and connected. Include the foundations and connections in the enclosure design.

For existing courts, assess the supporting surface before choosing anchors. Agree who is responsible for excavation, court-surface repairs and installation acceptance before placing the order.

Football fields

A football perimeter example uses 3,000 mm-wide panels with approximately 3.8 mm coated wire. Posts are 60 mm round tubes with 2.5 mm walls; rails are 50 mm tubes with 2 mm walls. Materials and finishes include galvanized low-carbon steel with PVC/PE mesh coating, powder- or dip-coated frames, and dark or grass green.

Specify the football code and intended activities in the brief. Divide the drawing into boundary runs, spectator-facing areas and locations where escaped balls would cause problems. Design the goal-end containment height separately from the perimeter boundary.

Include groundskeeping routes and equipment storage access. Position openings so routine maintenance does not depend on removing fence panels, and identify who controls access while the field is in use.

Baseball fields and backstops

A baseball fencing example uses woven diamond mesh in low-carbon steel with hot-dip galvanizing followed by PVC. General ranges are 50 × 50–75 × 75 mm openings, 1.2–5.0 mm wire diameter and 5–50 m rolls. Colours include green, black and white.

Separate field perimeters, dugout separation and backstops behind the catcher in the design brief.

Prepare separate requirements for each location. For the backstop, have the designer assess foul-ball paths, spectator positions, coverage, supports and connections. Ask for the proposed geometry on the drawing rather than relying on the word “backstop” in a quotation. Review dugout entrances and player circulation alongside the surrounding fence.

Volleyball courts

A volleyball enclosure example uses 3 m-wide panels, 3.8 or 4 mm wire measured over the plastic coating, and 60 or 75 mm posts with 2.5 mm walls. Rails are 50 mm diameter with 2 mm walls. The woven galvanized low-carbon steel mesh has PVC/PE coating; posts and frames are powder- or dip-coated. Colours include dark green and grass green.

Keep the fence outside the agreed player movement area. Distinguish fence height from overhead clearance: they answer different design questions. For sand courts, show the finished surface level and how it relates to gates and the bottom of the enclosure. For adjacent courts, decide whether internal separation is needed as well as an outer boundary.

Multi-use courts

Diamond mesh uses interlocking spiral wires to form flexible woven mesh, with bolted or clipped site assembly. Applications include basketball, tennis, volleyball and soccer. General plastic finish options include green, black and grey.

List the complete sports programme before selecting the enclosure. Review mesh openings, bottom gaps and gate gaps against every ball type. Include expected use intensity and any planned changes in activities. Include mesh retention and impact suitability in the designer's assembly review.

Ask the designer to evaluate 2DG Twin Wire Mesh Fence and 3DF V-Mesh Panel Fence as alternatives against the same sports brief. Fence models

Specify the CLY assembly

CLY Chain Link Fence is made to order in any height, with a standard wire diameter of 4 mm. The product page lists heights of 2,000/2,500/3,000 mm, widths of 2,500/3,000 mm and 50 mm mesh, plus wire diameters of 3.55/4.75 mm before coating and 5.00/6.40 mm afterward. Retain those published values as references when defining the ordered specification; they do not limit our custom height capability.

Use the agreed order dimensions for the CLY component schedule. Send us your layout and requested heights for a proposal covering taller sections and their supports. Specify wire diameters in metric units and identify the coating measurement basis. CLY uses woven mesh with reinforced crossbars.

We supply both embedded-in-concrete posts and base-plate (bolt-down) posts. The choice depends on site conditions.

Coating and colours

CLY specifies galvanized wire with PVC at least 0.5 mm thick, and galvanized posts with polyester powder coating at least 100 μm thick. Its listed colour is RAL 6005, blackish green; we supply PVC coating in any colour to your requirement. CLY finish specifications

Request component-specific inspection and repair instructions. Include coating checks and maintenance responsibilities in the handover schedule.

Gates and access

CommandFence lists SSG Single-Leaf Swing Gate, DSG Double-Leaf Swing Gate, TSG Tracked Sliding Gate and TCG Trackless Cantilever Gate. Confirm enclosure compatibility before selecting a model. Gate catalogue

Mark pedestrian, equipment and emergency access on the layout. Specify clear openings, operating space, infill, ground gaps and hardware. Review accessibility and escape arrangements with the responsible project designer. Keep gate movement clear of playing areas and circulation routes. Include locks, keys and maintenance responsibilities in the handover requirements.

FAQ

Which model should a sports-fence quotation start with?

Start with CLY Chain Link Fence. Match its mesh, supports, height and access arrangements to the intended activities.

How should I specify a baseball backstop?

Specify the baseball backstop as a separate assembly. Have the designer set its coverage, supports and connections around foul-ball paths and spectator positions.

Which dimensions should I use to order CLY?

Specify your required height: CLY can be made to any height, and our standard wire diameter is 4 mm. The published dimensions include heights of 2,000/2,500/3,000 mm, widths of 2,500/3,000 mm and 50 mm mesh. Include the agreed wire diameter, its coating measurement basis and the coating schedule. PVC coating is available in any colour.

What information makes a quotation useful?

Provide the sports list, site plan, fence runs, requested heights, ground conditions, mounting approach, access requirements and component finish schedule. Show each enclosure's role on the drawing.
